Let’s perform a thorough mix critique of an old, terrible mix of mine…shall we?
I’ve been recording and mixing metal for a pretty long time. This year will be my 16th year as a heavy music studio guy.
It’s been so long that I sometimes forget just how much I’ve learned over time.
I’ve learned A TON from working with more experienced producers than myself at the time.
I’ve also learned a whole lot (the hard way) through endless trial and error and by simply just doing it for 1.6 decades.
Just recently, a subscriber inquired about wanting to hear one of my older mixes from early on in my career. This piqued my interest.
I decided to dive deep into my old DVD-R archives (yes, this session is THAT old) and pull out a mix of mine from the 3rd band I had ever worked with.
Although the music is pretty cool….WOW what a mix 😂.
I feel terrible that this is the product that I delivered to this poor band way back in 2007.
I also feel bad for anyone that had to listen to this mix on Myspace back then.
I sure took those “surgical EQing” techniques that people preached about in forums to a whole other level.

Be sure to keep your speakers down…it’s that painful.
