Parallel compression on drums can add a ton of character and punch to your drum sound when utilized the right way within your metal or rock mix.
It’s a great technique to whip out after you’ve already gone through compressing and dialing in the EQ on your individual drums tracks.
Another benefit is that you’re adding extra compression without removing the dynamics and tone of the original drum mix. Sometimes you need that extra bit of aggression, but don’t wan to ruin the natural tone of your raw drum mix.
Parallel compression is the best of both worlds.
I’ve found that people often overcomplicate parallel compression on drums.
More often than not, people will opt to utilize sends for their individual drum tracks.
Although this can be done with great success, I take a much simpler approach that always gets the job done.
No complicated routing necessary.
