It’s true, learning what NOT to EQ is one of the great secrets of pro mix engineers.
Have you ever wondered how pro mixers knock out such a high volume of work at such a rapid pace?
I don’t know about you, but I used to spend an eternity dialing in a mix…especially when it came to EQing my tracks.
EQing my drums, vocals and especially guitars always felt like an neverending uphill battle.
But with that being said, I never stopped to ask myself these fundamental questions:
“Should I even be EQing this sound in the first place?”
“Why am I endlessly tweaking this instrument in solo when no one will ever hear it outside of the context of the mix?”
“Does this small detail even matter? Does it hurt or get in the way of the compellingness of the song?”
The truth is that the pros don’t waste their time EQing stuff that doesn’t need to be touched in the first place.
In this video, I talk about the mindset shift that you need to make in order to speed up and improve your mixes by not focusing on problems that (probably) don’t exist in the first place!
The key is to know what NOT to EQ when you sit down to mix.
