Fact: Vocal EQ does NOT have to be rocket science.
People seem to really struggle with dialing in a great vocal mix and I’ve found that it’s usually due to people overcomplicating the process.
As engineers, we LOVE making things complicated. This is true especially when it comes to processes like EQ.
There’s no reason to go nuts notching out a bunch of different “problem frequencies” when you mix vocals (or any other instrument for that matter).
As a matter of fact, I often utilize an EQ technique that’s the complete opposite of the “problem frequency” approach.
For me, it’s all about making the mixing process as simple as possible.
Why make things complicated when there’s no reason to?
