Active vs. passive pickups. What type of pickups should you be using when recording heavy guitars?
Should you be using active? (remember the days when you were a cool kid ONLY after having an EMG 81 and 85 installed in your guitar?)
Should you be using some overpriced boutique brand of passive pickups which are all the rage these days? (the antithesis of an EMG 81)
Does any of this even matter?
Well, after spending the last 15 years in the studio recording heavy band after heavy band..
Using every pickup/amp/cab/sim/IR combination imaginable..
I do have my opinion on whether or not you should be using active or passive pickups when recording heavy guitars in the studio.
As audio engineers (and especially as guitar players) we LOVE gear.
So much so that it ends up distracting us from the stuff that actually matters.
People tend to have strong opinions on this topic and I’d love to hear what you’ve found to be true within your own experience.
Active vs. passive pickups…does it actually make a real difference at the end of the day?
