Have you ever noticed how OBSESSED people have been getting over “gain staging” throughout the last few years?
Yes, in the analog domain, it makes sense..
Audio levels aren’t so black and white when it comes to the analog world.
For example: You can overdrive your tape machine or tube mic preamps, but by how much? How much is not enough and how much is too much signal? Does the kick sound better when it’s slammed into the red or when it’s cleaner?
Luckily, we don’t have to worry about all that stuff too much these days.
When it comes to modern interfaces, DAW’s and plugins, this is a non-issue.
Obsessing over “gain staging” makes 0% sense for most modern home-studio owners.
In Pt. 1 of this 3-part video series, I’ll be sharing my dead-simple approach to setting levels within my DAW.
I also show you my method for producing a balanced low-end during the rough mix stage of the mixing process.
