Mix METAL Drums For Clarity & Size – Fixing It In The Mix Pt. 3

How do you mix metal drums for clarity AND size?

As someone who mixes a TON of productions that I did not produce or record myself, it’s extremely common for issues to come with the source tracks that I was given to work with..

Especially when it comes to mixing drums.

Drums are one of the hardest instruments to record and capture properly which results in them being one of the hardest instruments to get right in a mix.

And it becomes exponentially more challenging when you’re mixing HEAVY music.

For example:

What do you do if the engineer neglected to record a room mic with the drum kit and your drums sound too sterile, separate and lifeless.

What do you reach for when no matter what fancy pants convolution reverb you whip out in your drum mix?

What happens if the engineer didn’t tune or mic up the toms properly and there’s a whole lot of muddy overtones and ring happening?

What do you do when an EQ, gate or compressor aren’t helping?

Well, in Part 3 of this week’s “Fixing It In The Mix” video series..

I share my two favorite top-secret drum mixing hacks that I regularly rely on when I have to mix metal drums.

*Fun fact: For the audio sample in the tutorial, the engineer who was too lazy to throw up a mono room mic or tune the drummer’s toms properly was ME. 😂
