Reverb plays a very specific role for me when mixing metal drums’ snare reverb.
Some engineers opt to use reverb on their snare drums for extra size and width.
I use reverb more as a binding agent.
In other words, I don’t use reverb to add massive size to my drum sounds. I opt to use reverb more to help hold my drum sound together.
The overall “glue” of my drum kit is the name of the game for me when mixing metal drums and dialing in snare reverb.
I’m always aiming for a natural, big drum sound that hits hard AND sounds realistic.
There is no right or wrong way to dial in snare reverb. It all comes down to personal preference.
