Is recording guitars with tube amps overrated in the studio?
Last week I played 5 samples taken from productions featuring both amp sims AND real tube amps. I use both regularly.
Were you able to tell which were which?
In today’s video I reveal which were, in fact, real amps and which ones were amp sims.
I also show you how I got my amp sims sounding so close to real amps (no fancy trickery involved).
In reality you can achieve the same results with both tube amps and amp sims.
The problem is that there are endless myths being spewed across the internet convincing people that amp sims aren’t as good.
I still prefer the feel and volume of a tube amp live, but in the studio…I’m just as happy using an amp sim (which I do all of the time).
Were you able to spot these last week? Which ones did you think were real amps and were actually amp sims and vice versa?
Be sure to find out the final results!
I have nothing against recording guitars with tube amps (I do it myself), I just feel that it’s not necessary.
As long as you’re using a good impulse response, you can achieve identical results with amp sims.
