Sidechaining And Mixing Metal Drums

Just recently, a subscriber got me thinking about sidechaining and mixing metal drums:

“Will you do/have you done a video on side-chaining? I definitely heard the kick attenuating the bass towards the end there.”

Well..in actuality, I almost never use sidechain compression on my bass guitar.

Come to think of it, I don’t really use sidechain compression on anything.

The clarity and punch between the kick and bass that he’s referring to is due to simple high-pass filtering and carving out proper space in the low-end.

With that being said, I am a huge fan of using sidechain processing in a way that I don’t hear people talk about much on the internet.

In this tutorial, I show you exactly how I utilize this sidechaining technique when mixing live drums for extra control and clarity in a busy metal drum mix.

Also, you can achieve the same tone heard in the tutorial by downloading my Impulse Response Octopack for free by clicking HERE.

The Octopack includes 8 microphones and two different mic placements for each :

– Shure SM57

– Shure SM81

– Sennheiser e609
