Heavy Snare Drum EQ: Top Vs. Bottom Snare Tracks

Your choice of snare drum EQ when mixing is EXTREMELY important.

Have you ever noticed that swapping out the sound of your snare often completely changes the vibe and character of your entire production?

The truth is that most killer-sounding productions feature killer-sounding snare drums (and vice versa).

Programmed drums..live drums..it doesn’t matter.

The interesting thing is that a snare drum is really a combination of two separate components:

1) The thud and punch of the batter (top) head

2) The sizzle and snap of the snare (bottom) wire

With that being said: What’s a solid way of EQing these two components within a heavy production?

Should you EQ the top and bottom in the same manner?

Or should you treat them as their own unique elements?

In this tutorial, I share my go-to approach for snare drum EQ when dealing with top and bottom tracks in my mixes.
