Yup, you heard me correctly, I only use two amp sims when mixing heavy guitars.
I record, mix and master heavy bands for a living..
And I use only TWO amp sims for the large majority of my work.
Every once in a blue moon I’ll try something different, but when it comes to producing the results that clients shell out cash for..
I reach for the same two plugins over and over and over again.
I know this might seem absurd given the fact that every five seconds there’s a new amp sim hitting the market that “sounds and feels like a real tube amp”, but I want you to know the truth:
You’re better off using only a handful of plugins and knowing them well than the opposite:
Owning a million different plugins..and not knowing any of them well (which is most home studio owners!).
This goes for any audio-related tool and amp sims are no exception.
I only care two things when it comes to the work I do:
- That the client is happy
- The sound of the final mix is killer
How I get there or what tools I use along the way mean nothing.
In my latest tutorial, I show you exactly why I only use two amp sims when mixing heavy guitars in the studio and why you really only need a handful of tools to achieve the results you want.
Unfortunately many of us (especially guitar playing producers) get caught in the unnecessary trap of endlessly buying and obsessing over amp sims.
