Most people don’t realize this, but engineers have been using samples since the 1980’s. That’s right, before DAWs even existed.
Drum reinforcement is nothing new. Pro mixers have been using them in creative ways for DECADES.
The fact is that samples are all over many of your favorite records (most likely without you even realizing it).
From Metallica to Rage Against The Machine to Pantera to Nirvana to Morbid Angel…it’s hard to find a record NOT featuring drum samples.
With that being said, it’s absolutely ridiculous that aspiring engineers are being brainwashed into thinking that drum samples are some form of cheating..
Or that they’re making drummers sound like drum machines.
Trash talking the use of drum samples seems to have become the cool thing to do on the internet.
As a result, it’s caused a lot of confusion amongst aspiring engineers.
If you want your productions to compete with real records, you must mix like a REAL pro.
